Choosing Liquid, Sweetener and Fruit for Your Seed Shake
August 23, 2026
Why the three choices matter
A seed shake is a simple thing: seed powders plus a liquid, a sweetener and a fruit. Because the seeds are the same in every cup of a given blend, those three choices are where you personalise it. Every Naturalition shake includes a free choice of each, so there is no extra cost for experimenting.
Keep in mind that the seeds themselves already carry fats and fibre, so the extras do not need to do much heavy lifting. A simple combination often tastes best, and it lets you notice the seed flavour you chose in the first place.
Choosing a liquid
The liquid decides the body of the drink. Milk gives a rich, creamy result and adds a little protein and calcium. Oat drink is smooth and naturally slightly sweet. Almond or other nut drinks are lighter and nutty. Coconut water is refreshing and light, which suits tropical fruit and the lighter, digestion-focused blends. Plain water gives the lightest shake and lets the seeds speak.
Seeds such as chia, flax and basil absorb liquid, so a thicker liquid produces a thicker shake. If you like a drinkable texture, lean toward water, coconut water or a thin plant drink. If you want something closer to a pudding, choose a creamier base.
If you are dairy-free, lactose-intolerant or avoiding soy, mention it when you order and check what the partner shop offers. Not every liquid is available everywhere, so it helps to have a second choice in mind.
Choosing a sweetener
Fruit already brings natural sweetness, so many people find they need less sweetener than expected. A ripe banana, mango or dates can carry the whole drink. Choose a small amount of sweetener if you are using tart fruit such as berries or green apple, and consider skipping it on days when the fruit is very ripe.
People managing blood sugar, or reducing added sugar for other reasons, can simply ask for the lightest sweetener option. If you have a medical diet, check with your doctor or dietitian about what suits you.
Choosing one fruit
Each shake includes one fruit. Banana is the all-rounder: creamy and mild. Berries are tart and bright. Mango and pineapple give a tropical feel. Apple and pear suit gentle, cosy blends. Papaya is popular with digestion-minded drinks. Strawberry and orange add vitamin C, which is helpful alongside iron-rich seeds such as pumpkin.
Combinations to try
For a creamy classic, try milk with banana and a small amount of sweetener. For a light, fresh shake, try coconut water with pineapple. For a post-workout shake, try milk or oat drink with banana. For a dessert-style option, try oat drink with strawberry or date. Keep a mental note of what you like, and change one thing at a time so you can tell what made the difference.
If you tend to find shakes too sweet, try the unsweetened route with a ripe banana for a week. If you find them too plain, add a little more fruit flavour through berries rather than extra sweetener. Taste changes, and what you like in winter may differ from summer.
